Your destination for birdwatching in Nicaragua

Due to the geographical position of Nicaragua, the country is the northernmost or southernmost limit for different species of birds, in Río San Juan there are good sites for birdwatching.

The Indio Maíz Biological Reserve, is one of the most impressive natural areas, there the number of birds is abundant and varied, and includes fascinating species such as toucans, hummingbirds, trogons and a great diversity of waterfowl that live along the rivers that border and cross the reserve.

Indio Maíz also serves as a refuge for two species of birds in danger of extinction: the Lapa and the Great Curassow. There are more than 400 species that inhabit the area, which makes it one of the best places for bird watching.

From El Castillo or San Juan de Nicaragua, you can take a tour to observe birds, but also the exuberant flora and fauna.

The Los Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge, on the south coast of Lake Cocibolca or Nicaragua in the municipality of San Carlos, as a wetland area is home to a wide variety of waterfowl such as the beautiful roseate spoonbill and several species of kingfisher.

This important Ramsar Site has specialized guides, as well as trails and the suspension bridge viewpoint for observing flora and fauna.

Tucan

Similarly, one of the largest bird concentration sites in the region is Zapote Island, which is part of the Solentiname archipelago, located within Lake Nicaragua, approximately 15 kilometers from San Carlos.

This uninhabited island is the natural habitat of large colonies of birds, this untouched natural area can be a very rewarding birdwatching experience.

Thousands of native and migratory birds perch on Zapote Island, including cormorants, herons, and even spoonbills. There are quantities of birds present throughout the year, but April is the most spectacular month to visit since during that time there is more activity in the place. The best option to see birds is to go around the island by boat.

Within the Solentiname archipelago, there are other islands that offer lodging options, and there are also many natural and cultural attractions, which makes this little-explored area an interesting destination.
